Perth Festival of Arts
May 17 @ 10:17 am – May 26 @ 11:17 am

Perth Festival of the Arts is an annual 11 day May Festival, founded in 1972, and taking place in the City of Perth in Scotland. It is now in its 47th Year and is one of the oldest continuously running arts Festivals in Scotland. It started as an opera and classical music festival in the early ’70s and now covers all artforms. We hope that when the brochure hits the doormat or the twitter feed that there will be something in the programme for all the family. The bottom line for the Festival is top quality. We hope to bring to Perth shows that you may not see at other times of the year.

We like big names too. Here are a few who have performed at the Festival in recent years Bryn Terfel, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Nigel Kennedy, Joshua Bell, Alison Balsom, Barbara Bonney, Lesley Garrett, Van Morrison, Nicola Benedetti, Elaine Paige, Jools Holland, The Proclaimers, KT Tunstall, Justin Currie, The View, Marcus Brigstocke, Nina Conti, Teenage Fan Club, Dara O Briain, Russell Howard, Paul Merton, Julian Clary, Jack Bruce, The Magic Numbers, Calvin Harris, Admiral Fallow, Kassidy, Jack Bruce, Edwyn Collins, Sharleen Spiteri, Joan Armatrading, The Waterboys, The Stranglers, Don MacLean, Richard Hawley, Seth Lakeman, Bill Wyman, Courtney Pine, Mnozil Brass, Ukulele Orchestra, Ann Sofie Von Otter, John Williams, Treacherous Orchestra, Adam Holmes, Rachel Sermanni, Dougie MacLean, King Creosote, Scouting for Girls, Kassidy … and many more. The Festival stages full scale opera each year with wonderful productions by English Touring Opera who have come to the Festival each year since 2001.

The Festival is an independent registered charity and a very lean organisation so all the funds raised go to keeping ticket prices as low as possible. The aim is to put on a great Festival each year.

We Will Remember Them
Elgar: They are at rest
Tavener: Song for Athene
Gurney: Since I Believe in God the Father Almighty
Judith Bingham: A Walk with Ivor Gurney
Howells: Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing
Holst: The Evening Watch
Parry: Songs of Farewell

The British seem to have an instinct for remembrance, deep in the collective psyche. It is in the
fabric of our towns and cities in the form of inscribed memorials, and just below the surface
there is a respect for sacrifice, particularly in active service. The minute’s silence, the sight of
falling poppies, crowds lining streets for a cortege, and of course the music of consolation
and respect which has a sound which so many recognise. From the first two notes of the Last
Post from a lone bugler to the emotive first chords of Elgar’s Nimrod, we have a culture of
commemoration in music and the choral tradition possesses an unmistakable role in giving
voice and words to these sentiments.
Tenebrae offers the finest pairing of poetry and music in a range of works, some already
treasured in the heart of the nation, with other masterpieces which might well join them

Elephant Sessions
WINNERS OF THE BBC SCOTS TRAD MUSIC AWARDS ‘ALBUM OF THE YEAR’ 2017
‘2017 has been a remarkable year for Elephant Sessions. The band who hail from the Highlands of Scotland and who met at the Newcastle University Folk degree have exploded onto the indie folk scene with unparalleled effect.
The release of their award winning album ‘All We Have is Now’ in June of this year, was followed by live appearances at some of Europe’s most notable festivals. Audiences crowd surfed their way through the summer and marquee floors broke under the weight of bouncing fans.
The Mercury nominated Alt J, along with BBC Radio 6 found themselves converted to the band’s unique brand of indie folk. Reviews from Rolling Stone Magazine sat alongside folk magazine coverage. Radio features accompanied documentaries and highlights shows on television stations.

‘‘The versatility of Elephant Sessions is its strength. Passionate about their culture and their origins, these Scots are using their instruments like weapons to destroy clichés. ..We love them’ – Rolling Stone Magazine

‘Absolutely Superb…’ – Chris Hawkins, BBC Radio 6

“‘A pyrotechnic highlight of the Soiree d’Ouverture d’Ecosse’ (Festival Interceltique de Lorient) – Songlines Magazine

FARA

Fara brings together four musicians at the forefront of today’s Scottish folk scene, Jennifer Austin, Kristan Harvey, Jeana Leslie and Catriona Price’s three fiddles and a piano, to produce a fiery sound rooted strongly in their upbringing among the music of Orkney.

Having been friends since early childhood, the girls grew up under the musical guidance of Douglas Montgomery (The Chair, Saltfishforty) with the three East Mainlanders of the band in fiddle group Hadhirgaan at Kirkwall Grammar School, and Kristan, a West Mainlander, in Jenny Keldie’s Shoramere at Stromness Academy. The four girls then went on to study south, and hold degrees from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Strathclyde University, The Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Academy of Music. They have all since established themselves in the Scottish music scene winning prizes along the way which include the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, The BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, The Deutsche Bank Award in Performance and Composition, and the Danny Kyle Award.

The idea for the band came after several appearances as “The Chairettes”, The Chair’s backing band. At one gig, the girls were asked to play a couple of sets on their own, and Bob Gibbon, The Chair’s Accordionist and Orkney Folk Festival director, suggested they form a new band. To the Chair’s disappointment they decided to loose the name, and Fara was born. Since then, the quartet has performed across the UK and Europe, including a special performance at the Royal Albert Hall for the Radio 2 Folk Awards, where they were also nominated in the Horizon category.

With vibrant arrangements full of rich harmonies, energetic fiddle playing and driving piano, Fara’s show is an exciting one. Performing a mixture of self-penned and traditional Orkney tunes as well as stunning vocals, the girls’ combined musical experiences and friendships produce a diverse, individual sound.

In Clarinet Goes to Town Emma Johnson traces the roots of traditional American jazz whilst paying tribute to some of the greatest clarinettists of all time – Sidney Bechet, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw – with the help of John Lenehan (piano) and Paul Clarvis (percussion).

Perth Festival of The Arts -Hannah Fisher & Friends @ St Johns Kirk | Scotland | United Kingdom

Hannah Fisher from Dunkeld began learning classical violin at a young age. She was first introduced to traditional music aged eleven when she began tuition with Pete Clark and attended weekly sessions at the local pub the Taybank. Having grown up surrounded by the music of Niel Gow, one of Scotland’s most influential traditional fiddle players and composers, she has also been inspired by the playing of local piper, the late Gordon Duncan. In more recent years, her range of influences broadened to Ireland and America with the likes of Cathal Hayden and Liz Carroll.

Hannah has already made a career for herself performing under her own name and with the Hannah Fisher Band. She performs as a duo with Sorren Maclean and has worked with many well known acts such as Dougie MacLean, Ross Ainslie and most recently Roddy Woomble … touring extensively with Idlewild.

Hannah, a finalist in the 2013 Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year contest was described while performing during the Celtic Connections Festival with Sorren Maclean as ”a beguiling, subtly pop-inflected mix of songs and tunes, both covers and originals”.
