About Edinburgh Southside

Edinburgh's Southside is one of the most vibrant parts of the city with a large diversity of retail shops, café's, restaurants , pubs, bars, visitor attractions and live music venues. Take a walk up the Southside starting from Princess street and up north bridge when you cross the High street you may not realise it but you are standing on another bridge (The South Bridge). The reason the South bridge does not appear to be a bridge is because all the shops and tenements sit on the bridge, this gives the appearance of the bridge being an ordinary street. Below the bridge are the Edinburgh Vaults. The Vaults are a series of chambers formed in the nineteen arches of the South, which was completed in 1788. For around 30 years, the vaults were used to house taverns, cobblers and other tradesmen, and as storage space for illicit material. The Vaults where excavated in the 1980's and are now a popular attraction though various ghost and history tours. (Improve this description or add photos)
